I love VLC because it can play verity of file types, streams, even can open videos and settings from devices such as capture cards, web cams too. No matter which operating system you use, you can still install VLC and experience keeps same (close buttons, preferences location will differ according to OS). best thing is no ads or spyware.
recently noticed VLC refused playing streams behind the firewall. so I was looking for place to set proxy.
If you are behind a proxy when accessing internet VLC refuses to play streaming media links. but VLC can still play streaming videos after setting proper proxy server settings
first you need to go to Tools->Preferences (windows). if you are in other OS check under edit menu. then select Input / Codecs Tab as follows
Under Network enter HTTP proxy URL including http:// part in following format
http://<proxy server IP>:<proxy port>
then press Save. that's it.
now go to Media-> Open Network Stream (Ctrl+N) and enter network URL.
